Higher Voice Always Win the Title | Wrong Perception

I love watching singing competition in Television program, way back early in 2005 we're this fever starts when Sarah Geronimo win as a Grand Champion of Search For a Star. Her winning piece was To love you more by Celine Dion. I wacthed that competition and she was so good at her age was only 16. Then suddenly other TV Network made Talent Search and the story of singing competition is the gateway to stardome. However, for some reasons, most winning songs from the contestants itself seems to be always had higher note that makes this perception "The higher voice the better". For decades of witnessing this era of talent search in television, i wonder why that kind of  mentality was still sinking in many singing competition. I also notice that maybe that's right, when a singer can hit a tremendous higher note that was a big big advantage for her career.

In the other hand, singing with high note correcttly is really challenging and requires singing techniques. To some expert voice coaches and mentors they knew that not all singing with higher note techinques can be an advantage. The most experienced people in music also believed that singing must be done with clarity and harmony. It doesn't secure your slot to win with higher voice. There are lots of criteria that some judges might be looking for singer though some are gifted to have a higher voice with clarity as well.

Basically, I've watched foreign singing competition and one of them was "The Voice". When an artist perform or audition, majority of them around 60% (based on my estimate) didn't chose to sing higher song but instead their uniqueness of voice styling and tone makes it different and loved by the coaches/judges. Obviously foreign singers sounds so different here in the Philippines, some may have but not truly born with that tone. I am talking about that real voice timbre change when someone always practice songs from their favorite singers and you may called it "copy cat". The misconception of higher voice wins the title will still depend.

I also believed that lower note had to done with more attention to be deliveredi it clearly. This is neglected to some singers and honestly it is more hard to sing in lower notes.

When our voice reaching higher notes our diagphragm also expand with the breath support but in lower notes our breath control must hold for longer. The clarity of every single lyrics of the song (diction) was a requirement when singing and with the lower notes this is much harder for our voice didn't use lower note more often. Based on my experienced lower notes seems unnatural thing to do compared to higher note, that's why i am amazed to those singer with higher note and sing lower note as well so clean. Most RnB singers can play this techniques flawlessly like Beyoncè and Boyz2men. I like also Tori Kelly for hsr wonderful and clean riffs and runs (she's one of my favorite).

Right now, i am currently watching the new season of Tawag ng Tanghalan. I've seen different voices, techniques and genre, but I've also notice that judges right now are not into "the higher voice win the title". They are looking for unique voices and with originality. I am hoping that one day i can audition to that competition and have a chance to sing in a Television program. It will really be one of my memorable experience in my entire life. I wonder how it feels and come to think singing in front of the the crowd (audience) the host, the judges and a camera in front of you. That's insane lol!

For anyone out there losing hope to win in singing competition without higher voice register, don't you worry 'bout that thing! Work on clarity of voice, diction and practice more. Our voice is flexible but you need to take care also that stretching voice in a wrong way frequently can damage your voice. Be careful and learn basics techniques and one of them are proper breathing. In my next blog, i will talk about the other one that needs to have if you really like to be a good singer. I hope it can help anyone!
