If you are just like me that doing a cover in a short period of time inside your home studio this tips can help you to established a right foundation from your first try. I know that you can relate to me by this first tip.
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT GENRE
When we say 'genre' it refers to a type/kind of music. For example a pop/country suits my voice and i really felt that my voice is comfortable on that genre. In some other cases, since we wanted to gain more viewers to watch our song cover videos, there's a tendency that we always grab any kind of song that was so new and very popular.
We are lacking to have an intimate and not careful on choosing the right song that fits our voice so well. But i am not saying that is not wise choice to pick songs that was new. If you are confident that you can produce a new flavor for that song, GO FOR IT! Most artist that plays an instrument can be more playful and more bold on showing more rather than singing with a karaoke.
I am not saying that karaoke is not good at all, there's a lot of difference when you can do whatever you want in a song better than karaoke (accompanied by a piano or guitar). My second tip would be very obvious anyway.
2. LEARN AT LEAST 1 MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
Again, this is just my personal thought guys and i hope to disclaimer for this one. As i am singing for more than 10 years. I believe that it will be very helpful for a singer if you know how to play at least one musical instrument.
The first instrument that i learned how to play is a guitar. Guitar nowadays is very useful not just for covering song but vocally. You can practice more often while singing with your guitar. So, if you planning to start covering song, give time to learn musical instrument as well. It will be a big help to you guys, i swear!
You can choose between guitar or piano. This 2 instrument is a very nice choice for a singer. You can sing along with them instantly. It will give more confidence by your own style. Try to experiment first and see for yourself which one will be more easier for you to learn.
3. DO NOT COPY THE ORIGINAL ARTIST STYLE.
There are times that we don't notice that we are duplicating the artist exactly how they sang it. But like i did, i give respect to the original artist melody. I'm not trying to copy almost how they sang it. I always ask myself how can make a different sound and flavor for this kind of song.
You can start my the chorus part and make some accapella to it, or give some riffs and runs if the song quiet easy for you to sing. It will help you to be more musically creative and it is more fun if you try it in your own.
