HOME STUDIO SET UP + TIPS ON BUILDING YOUR HOME/ROOM STUDIO

Making a home studio is one of the most common steps to do when doing a cover. Some people record their song by renting a recording studio. That is a little bit pricey for those people that started to do begin their journey in the music scene. Before we started to have an idea to do cover, there are certain things that we need consider in making your own HOME STUDIO. This is my personal tips and i hope it can everyone like it helps me.

1. SOUND PROOF YOUR ROOM

This is the basic principle on a studio, whether you are a singer, reviewing stuff and doing a tutorial. Your room needs to be SILENT. Any noise that will be recorded along with your stuff will definitely ruin your good work.
You must have to invest on a good quality ACOUSTIC FOAM. The thicker you get, the better. The thinner you get the lesser effect you get. Most empty room will have an echo and more reverb sound on voice but after you put all of your stuff and decide where will you put your acoustic foam, it will really change the surroundings. There are lot of acoustic foams in the market. It's up to you how to spend your money wisely. If you are like me who just started with tight budget i will recommend that you will look ON SALE acoustic foams.

This one is cheaper for this kind of variant and pieces. As you may see this is not too thick but not to thin. They come with 2 colors black and blue. I get this 2 dozen for less than P800, very cheap right :) Aside from being a big help on sound aspects, it will enhance the look on your background.

2. GET THE RIGHT AUDIO INTERFACE

What is an Audio Interface?

This is the device that helps us to record vocal/instrument with the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

Since i started on a tight budget, we prefer to buy used interface. We buy Scarlet 2i2 1st gen Interface. This model has only 2 cable outlet (Mic and Instrument) I play guitar also so as of now this one will fit for me.

How to use:

I am using Ableton Live and simply connect the Scarlett 2i2 Interface on my laptop and we're ready.  If you don't know how to used recording with DAW you can watch some tutorial. There are tons of video available to watch and learn by yourself.

There's a lot to discuss about this one i will pause here and maybe in my other blogs i can explain more 'bout it:)

3. Which one to choose? CONDENSER / DYNAMIC MICROPHONE

If you need to invest for stuff in recording, this one needed to be on your list too. Microphone is essential in recording. There are 2 types of microphone that uses in recording vocals (Condenser mic & Dynamic) The difference of the two is.

CONDENSER MIC

This mic is found in recording studio (quieter place). I have sample photo that i am using right now. This is one of the cheapest mic in the market (BM800) A condenser mic records the vocal in a large frequency range. However because of this specs, this kind of mic are more sensitive in all of the noise around you. This mic needed 48v like this. Condenser mic used to record vocal far from your mouth ideally with a pop filter.

DYNAMIC MIC

This mic is good for live gig. This mic is also ideal for drums and amplifiers. I often see dynamic mic that was used by Boyce Avenue. Dynamic mic used to record vocal more closer to your mouth/instrument compare to condenser mic.

You can choose between this 2 mics, but if you are starting to record by your own i would suggest the condenser mic.

4. SPEAKER MONITOR

A good quality speaker monitor is important to you if you're going to record your own material. Most common studio speaker monitor that was used even for the professional one used is the KRK studio speaker monitor.

I haven't try this speaker yet, it is pricey but the price speaks to it's performance. There's a lot of good review about this one, and I've seen this speaker on every studio that i visit.

As of this moment, i have here Fostex 6301B. I think this one surprise with a good quality sound and the bass sound are not broken.

Though i only have one of this, it really impress me. If i will have a budget this year i will still use my Fostex speaker and buy KRK speaker for additional quality sounds.

I hope this one can help a newbie like me and be guided by this SIMPLE tips on having a home studio:)
